- Luis Quiroz Ravines
The Bible mentions cumin as a spice for flavoring bread and soups; but also as currency to pay tithes to the priests.
The Egyptians used it to mummify and have been used over millennia as a cultural symbol, food, and medicine. Cumin is originally from Egypt but has been widely cultivated in China, India, and Mediterranean countries.
The Romans and Greeks also widely used to replace the very scarce and expensive black pepper.
In the Middle Ages, it was a common species and gained notoriety for being considered a symbol of love.
Health benefits of cumin
Cumin has a high antioxidant power higher than many fruits and vegetables and is very useful to treat stomach and digestive disorders.
But one of its main features is that it improves nutrient absorption and increases metabolism, detoxifies the liver and acts as a mild natural laxative to combat constipation and is an effective decongestant in cases of respiratory problems.
The scientific name is cyminum cumin cyminum and contains high doses of iron, an essential component of hemoglobin for oxygen transport, key in increasing metabolism and energy.
Traditionally it has been used to relieve digestive problems because it stimulates the secretion of pancreatic enzymes, essential for the assimilation of nutrients.
Lose Weight with Cumin
Cumin is rich in phytosterols and comprises more than 100 different chemical elements, including a group of saponins with cholesterol-lowering effect.
To check these and other effects of cumin on levels of blood fat, Iranian researchers were subjected to an experiment with a group of 88 obese or overweight women.
Two groups were formed and subjected to a moderate caloric restriction diet. In addition to a group, they were given twice daily yogurt with 3 grams of ground cumin and the other group only natural yogurt.
The results were surprising.
After 21 days, the group yogurt with cumin lost on average 50% more weight and additionally lost 14.64% of body mass in relation to the group consuming the only yogurt.
In the group yogurt with cumin, triglycerides dropped 23 points against only 5 points in the control group. Another striking result of yogurt and cumin group is significantly reduced waist circumference and body mass index.
Finally, the group yogurt and cumin fell about 10 points LDL cholesterol while the group without cumin only reduced a point
Researchers believe that weight loss may stem from the increased power consumption and heat produced by the cumin and its ability to speed up metabolism.
At the end of the month, yogurt and cumin group had lost an average of 20 pounds and just over 15% fat compared to yogurt group cumin.
Complementary Therapies magazine published the results of this experiment that could help you lose weight if you put it into practice.
